As a gay man I know how these kinds of attitudes can damage lives. Is it too much to expect that the elected officials of our countries would be working to protect vulnerable people from discrimination and prejudice? But here they are spewing forth their bigoted bullshit, fanning the fires of hate and vulnerable gay kids are dying because of it. I don't have the language to describe how vile I think these people are. I can only imagine how much better our world would be if all our elected officials were atheists - if only - for now it will remain dream.
I sit at work all day with my two colleagues - putting up with a load of passive aggressive bullshit coming from Mr Sanctimonious Self Righteous Prick whilst my non homophobic Christian Lite boss sits in adoration of how virtuous it is for him to be so committed to his godly life of Christian moralistic values - totally naive to how much of an asshole he is - it makes me want to puke.
There is no virtue in being a Christian Moralist. The problem when someone thinks of themselves as righteous is that invariably in their mind there will always be those who are not righteous. Their narrow idea of an acceptable lifestyle creates marginalization because it refuses to embrace the diversity that circumstance and the natural world invariably throws up. When self righteous people find themselves in positions of power it leads to and has led to some of the worst atrocities we have seen in the history of humankind.
Christians use the bible to disguise their hate as morality but there is no such thing as absolute biblical morality. If there were Christians would still be following the moral examples of the bible in their literal entirety - rape, witch burning, genocide and all. Christian morality has evolved over the last 2000 years in response to pressure from civilization's increasing concern for fairness and justice. It is not set in stone - it's just cherry picked from the bible to fit contemporary values.
It's time these Republican Christian Fundie nutjobs realized that there is no virtue in their hatred and stopped trying to save the world from nothing.

We are at a turning point for reason and acceptance of people for who they are... and the decay and dismissal of religion for what it's not.
I hold high hopes we'll live long enough to experience the former if not the latter.
David, you're exactly right. I hope you can take some small comfort in seeing that at least homophobia is becoming more and more socially unacceptable, and those expressing it have to run for cover on FOX News.
